For years, the people of Adachi, a rural community in Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River State, lived with a painful reality of no access to safe, clean water. Women and children walked long distances, often for close to an hour, just to fetch muddy water from drying streams and shallow wells.
The consequences were severe. Waterborne diseases became common, children missed school, and families struggled with the daily burden of survival.
But thanks to YOU, our incredible supporters, that story has changed.
In late 2023, ActionAid Nigeria, worked with the Adachi community to identify their most urgent need. Access to clean, safe drinking water. Together, we made it possible.
A centrally located borehole and hand pump water facility were completed in September 2024, ensuring clean water for over 3,000 residents, and even neighboring communities.
The results have been life changing. Cases of waterborne diseases have dropped drastically. Children now attend school regularly and on time. And girls like Cecilia, who once spent hours walking for water, now fetch clean water in less than 10 minutes.
“Before this project, I used to wake up very early to go far just to fetch water for myself and my younger ones,” Cecilia recalls. “It was stressful and unsafe. Now, with the borehole, we are happy, and we no longer drink no more contaminated water.”
